DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK
The background to the series of artwork called “Dreams of Ancient Stone”, is the exploration of form, color and thoughts on dreams. Through the extensive research of ancient Mayan and Olmec art, as well as today’s indigenous population of Honduras – such as the Lenca people, I became inspired to explore abstract and figurative art that has existed in the area for thousands of years. Moreover, it was an attempt to decolonize myself from old narratives that prevail in the west about the area. The art itself, explores themes of self-discovery within dreams and recurring patterns, that become fragments once we wake up. The figures are representative of the human spirit, as the ancient Mayan people believed that dreams served as portals to other worlds while sleeping. Playing with color has been crucial to these paintings, as color in itself is a very powerful tool.
