DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK
Untitled, 2015
Dreams are one thing everyone has in common. As Jack Kerouac put it, “All human beings are also dream beings. Dreaming ties all mankind together.” Dreams are mysterious and unexplainable and they help us escape to another world, freed from all limitations that our earthly life has. In the Interpretation of Dreams, Sigmund Freud said, “The dream is the liberation of the spirit from the pressure of external nature, a detachment of the soul from the fetters of matter.”
I would argue that most artist are lucid dreamers who abandon themselves feverishly – communing with other worlds, connecting with the subconscious, drowning in imagery, and reaching out into the ether. In my series of photographs called Untitled, 2015, I deal with escaping from realism, reaching a fantasy world, seeking out an altered state of consciousness removed from the humdrum. I use my own hair as a mysterious veil that magically removes me from reality but also protects me from it. Sometimes we just want to escape and dreams can take us there.
